New Tricks Series 4

Posted by Diah On June - 24 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

The unresolved crimes featured in ‘New Tricks’ are far from trivial, but the series itself boasts some interesting trivia. Did you know…

They may have handed in their badges and collected their pensions years ago, but Lane, Standing and Halford are back for a fourth series, still working at the London Metropolitan Police as civilians investigating unsolved crimes as part of boss Pullman’s team, Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS). Led by Pullman, who spends half her time trying to reign them in, the three men investigate an array of challenging and disturbing crimes.

You’d have to be very brave to tell this motley crew they are too old to chase criminals. Whatever they lack in agility, they more than make up for in their years of experience. Out of touch with modern policing, Jack, Brian and Gerry thrive on bending and even breaking the rules to get a result; something which certainly annoys Pullman. The question is: will Pullman stop them or join them in doing just about anything to get to the truth?

John Isner of the United States and his French opponent Nicolas Mahut made tennis history at Wimbledon on Wednesday as they contested the longest grand slam singles match of all time — and it is still to be finished.

It was called off for the day due to bad light at 59 games all in the fifth and deciding set after 10 hours of action on Court 18 at the All England Club.

During the marathon fifth set, the pair surpassed the previous record of six hours and 33 minutes set at the 2004 French Open, when Fabrice Santoro beat fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-4 6-3 6-7 3-6 16-14.

Coach Fabio Capello praised the spirit shown by England after they booked a berth in the World Cup knockout stages with a 1-0 win over Slovenia.

Striker Jermain Defoe’s first-half goal gave England the win but they finished second in Group C behind the United States and now face Germany on Sunday.

“This is what I wanted to see – the spirit and to see them fight together,” said Capello.

“We’ll now go forward. Their minds are free and they can play without fear.”

The 64-year-old Italian added that he was happy he had “rediscovered the team he knew from qualification”.

Captain Steven Gerrard, who played predominantly on the left, had been confident England would get the required result, despite being under immense pressure.

“We showed passion, fight and team spirit – we’re delighted to go through,” stated the Liverpool midfielder.

“We’ve done it before when our backs have been against the wall but we need to do it all the time.

“We need to find consistency, especially in the knockout stages. If we perform like we did against Algeria then we won’t get another chance.”
