The Netherlands came from a goal down to beat 10-man Brazil 2-1 in their World Cup quarterfinal clash in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

An early goal from Robinho had put Brazil in command, but in the second half the Dutch drew level when Wesley Sneijder’s cross was deflected into his own net by Felipe Melo.

Inter Milan’s Sneijder then headed his team ahead in the 68th minute after Arjen Robben’s corner had been cleverly flicked on by Dirk Kuyt. A miserable afternoon for Melo was completed when he was sent off for stamping on Robben. The Dutch will play either Uruguay or Ghana in the semifinals, but for Brazil and coach Dunga it is a bitter defeat.

“We are all responsible for this situation but I have the greatest responsibility,” he told AFP. The inspirational Sneijder was surprised to score the winner with a rare headed goal.

“This was my first header here, I don’t think it will happen again, but it was great,” he told AFP.

“The ball slipped on my bald head and went into the net, a great feeling.”

The 26-year-old added: “If you can eliminate Brazil, one of the best teams in this championship the first feeling is relief, we always believed in it.”

A Dutch victory had looked unlikely as the five-time World Cup champions took charge from the start.

Melo found Robinho with a precise pass through a static Dutch defense and he made no mistake as he swept his shot past Maarten Stekelenburg in the 10th minute.

Further chances fell to the Brazilians as Dani Alves set up defender Juan who blazed his volley over.

The best move of the match involving Robinho and Lus Fabiano saw Kaka draw a brilliant save from Stekelenburg, while right back Maicon shot into the side netting on the run as half-time approached.

There seemed no way back for the Dutch, but a 53rd minute aberration from Brazil keeper Julio Cesar turned the tide of the match.

He totally missed Sneijder’s left-footed cross from the right and the unfortunate Melo saw it brush his body before finding its way into the net.

More poor defending allowed Sneijder to give the Dutch the lead and when Melo was deservedly shown red it was the end of the line for the South American champions.

Only a strong run and shot by Kaka which was deflected away offered them much hope and they might have fallen further behind to Dutch counter attacks.

Apple has released official advice for iPhone 4 owners to overcome the problem of the device losing signal when held by the lower left corner.

Steve Jobs responded to a query about the problem from one owner by saying: “Just avoid holding it in that way.”

The official advice is to “avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band”.

Alternatively, said Apple, customers could buy a case to shield the antenna.

The iPhone 4 went on sale on 24 June, with hundreds of people queuing outside Apple’s flagship store in central London for the launch.

Many new owners reported that signal strength dropped when the phone was held.

In a statement, Apple said: “Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas.”

Steve Jobs issued his response in a message responding to an e-mail from the Ars Technica news site. Mr Jobs wrote that “All phones have sensitive areas”.

The problem is thought to be particularly acute for left-handed owners who naturally touch the phone in the sensitive area.

The casing of Apple’s latest phone is made of stainless steel, which also serves as its antenna.

Apple sells a rubber “bumper” that shields the sensitive area as do many other firms.

Richard Warner, one of the first to buy an iPhone 4, contacted BBC News, saying that he thought the phone was “useless in its current state”.

“Apple have created a phone that has an antenna on the bottom left-hand side of the phone.”

“This means that when you hold it in your left hand, the signal bars slowly fade until there is no signal,” he wrote.

‘Complaints’

A number of videos have been posted on video sharing site YouTube complaining about the reception issue.

One video had an American user running a speed test, with hands on and hands free.

In it, the user ‘awington’ says that, while holding the phone “it won’t even run the test when I am holding the phone… once I let go, it makes a connection and runs the test.

“Hold it a second time, and the upload test will not start.”

Social networking site Twitter was full of chatter, with numerous tweets on the reception problems.

The issue might stem from the way the integrated antenna is constructed. One section provides mobile reception, while another is for wi-fi.

Some users have speculated that touching the bottom of the phone bridges this gap, affecting signal strength.

When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone 4 at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, he described the integrated antenna as “really cool engineering”.

In this game, both German and English are not too meaningful change. Germany coach Joachim Loew back down Miroslav Klose who previously absent, due to red cards in the allowance for the Group D against the Serbs.

Meanwhile, England coach Fabio Capello’s squad for the reduction in permanent trust when defeating Slovenia.

New games running four minutes, goalkeeper David James had to work hard to get opportunities that confront Mesut Ozil. After beat Ashley Cole, the young German players are releasing volley on goal but the veteran goalkeeper could be intercepted.

German dependence on Klose started to appear when the striker was brought first German winner at minute 21. After winning a duel against John Terry, Klose put the ball into the goalkeeper James.

At minute 32, the German double advantage through Lukas Podolski. Starting from penetration by Thomas Muller, midfielders Podolksi This gives the bait to free-standing, so easily fired a shot into the goalkeeper James.
Make the British left behind two goals to give the response. Interval of five minutes later, the trust given Capello is paid off Matthew Upson. England midfielder minimize header with just dropping by after receiving feedback from Steven Gerrard.

England actually able to find an equalizer. But the origin of Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda issued a controversial decision to kick the ball does not endorse Frank Lampard in the 39th minute that hit the crossbar. In a clear impression the ball had gone into the goal.

Until the first half ended, Germany still maintains the advantage 2-1.

In the second half, England tempor attacks increase to catch up. In addition to the impression in a hurry in making a final resolution, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had gained the opportunity to confront the British.

However, sporadic attacks launched by the Three Lions should be paid handsomely. Through a counterattack, the German added two goals within three minutes to widen the benefits.

Germany started the third goal from a free kick which hit the UK posse Panzer team. Kick the ball directly into the front of the welcome Bastian Schweinsteiger. German midfielder dribbled down to the front of the penalty box, and give feedback to Muller for in firing James to goal.

The fourth goal Germany also is not much different. Starting from a counterattack, Ozil able to win the sprint, with Gareth Barry’s penalty on the right sector, the British defense. Ozil then provide direct feedback to Muller who directed a kick off to the England goalkeeper.

England still kept trying to keep pace with three goals to give a chance to force extra-time the match is terminated through. In the 80th minute, Gerrard kicks Neuer still be dammed.

Various efforts are being made England, but his discipline in the face of German defenses British attack makes the game must end with the score 4-1.

The unresolved crimes featured in ‘New Tricks’ are far from trivial, but the series itself boasts some interesting trivia. Did you know…

They may have handed in their badges and collected their pensions years ago, but Lane, Standing and Halford are back for a fourth series, still working at the London Metropolitan Police as civilians investigating unsolved crimes as part of boss Pullman’s team, Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS). Led by Pullman, who spends half her time trying to reign them in, the three men investigate an array of challenging and disturbing crimes.

You’d have to be very brave to tell this motley crew they are too old to chase criminals. Whatever they lack in agility, they more than make up for in their years of experience. Out of touch with modern policing, Jack, Brian and Gerry thrive on bending and even breaking the rules to get a result; something which certainly annoys Pullman. The question is: will Pullman stop them or join them in doing just about anything to get to the truth?

Amongst the many cases the team have to deal with in the fourth series, they head to the big top to investigate the murder of a circus owner and ringmaster, and look into the case of a rich old lady who loved her cats more than her relatives, leaving the cats all her money in her will.

Episode 1 – Casualty

Hell-bent on avenging his wife’s death, Jack Halford is prepared to risk everything to kill the man responsible, Ricky Hanson. As Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman becomes aware of the dangerous situation Halford has put himself in, she has to act fast to prevent him confronting his nemesis, resulting in a crash that jeopardises the future of the entire team. With Gerry Standing, Brian Lane and Halford hospitalised, Pullman is forced to accept temporary help at UCOS from the super efficient DCI Karen Hardwick, a woman who irritates Pullman on every level.

Episode 2 – God’s Waiting Room

Sandra Pullman’s private and professional worlds clash when her mother Grace suffers a fall and needs care. Mother and daughter do not share a close relationship, so when Grace temporarily moves in with Sandra, sparks fly. However, the two do agree that Grace can no longer live on her own and they set about finding a suitable nursing home for her. On the surface, Whitemead seems perfect, until one of the residents, Leonard, confides that the death of another elderly resident, his fiancée Maggie Newley, a year previously, was covered up and passed off as suicide.

Episode 3 -Ducking and Diving

When an armoured security van is found at the bottom of a lake, a link is made to Michael Dudley who disappeared 17 years ago. Michael’s disappearance coincided with the murder of Marie Sinclair. With the discovery of the van revealing that it was ransacked whilst underwater, and with Marie’s murder remaining unsolved, the team decides to reopen the case. Andrew Sinclair (Marie’s husband and owner of the security firm and the chief suspect at the time) continues to insist he is entirely innocent, but his story doesn’t quite add up. A visit to the new owner of the security firm, Steve Palmer, doesn’t provide Gerry Standing with records he was hoping to find, but it does result in Palmer making the cash-starved Standing an offer he can’t refuse.

Episode 4 – Nine Lives

A family feud erupts when a rich, lonely old woman, Dorothy Hepple, is found dead in her home, leaving all her money and property to her beloved cats, rather than her nephew Harry, and niece Caroline. Her body remained undiscovered for two weeks and the cause of death was undetermined, but the fact that her cats were deliberately locked in the house with her body, makes Jack Halford suspicious. There appears to have been no love lost between the late Ms Hepple and her neighbour Tim Cuswell, and while her carer Dale seems to have been devoted to her, his motives are questionable.

Episode 5 – Powerhouse

The team reinvestigates the 1950s murder of Frederick Tully, a young wages clerk at Battersea Power Station. Patrick Dunne was hung for Tully’s murder, but his granddaughter, Hannah is waging a campaign to get Dunne posthumously pardoned. The discovery of a suitcase of used fivers in the attic of the former Tully home sheds new light on the case, revealing a possible blackmail plot. And when Sir Edward Chambers, the key witness against Dunne, retracts his evidence, the team has reason to question the original investigation. But with Hannah reluctant to cooperate with the police, it is left to Gerry Standing to charm her mother, June, in order to gain an insight into the case, which Standing takes a little too literally.

Episode 6 – Buried Treasure

When Brian Lane’s dog Scampi digs up a body during his routine walk on the common, the team finds itself in a very unusual situation before the investigation has even begun. With a confession. Janice Small, the widow of a notorious criminal, admits to killing her husband’s lover as soon as she hears news of the discovery of a corpse. Only further investigation reveals that the skeleton is 600 years old, so does the common hide the grim remains of more than one victim?

Episode 7 – Father’s Pride

When a camera and film belonging to a man murdered in 1987, are discovered in the toilets of a Soho pub, the team enters the glamorous but murky world of modelling to reinvestigate the young man’s killing. When the film is tested and processed, the team discovers two images that stand out from the standard christening and wedding shots – a junkie shooting up and shot of a couple kissing. But it is not the images found on the film that raises eyebrows, it is the traces of sperm. Gerry Standing’s daughter Emily joins the team when she turns to Sandra Pullman, rather than her father, to help her fulfil her professional ambition. Apart from feeling snubbed, Standing isn’t convinced that Pullman is the right role model for Emily as he doesn’t want to see his daughter sacrifice her personal life for the job. Meanwhile, Brian Lane starts to unravel emotionally and psychologically. Even by his normally eccentric standards, Lane’s behaviour and fragile state of mind is alarming.

Episode 8 – Big Topped

Pullman’s trust in her team is shattered when she discovers they have hidden an important secret about her past from her. The news that her father, a Detective Inspector, killed himself while under investigation for corruption, throws into doubt everything she believed in. Still reeling from the news, Pullman is asked to reinvestigate another family affair – the death of circus ringmaster, The Great Miraculo aka Bert Dignam, at the request of Christy Berlin who has recently discovered that he was her biological father. But will the investigation at Spingles Circus be enough to distract Pullman from feeling utterly betrayed by her colleagues?

It was called off for the day due to bad light at 59 games all in the fifth and deciding set after 10 hours of action on Court 18 at the All England Club.

During the marathon fifth set, the pair surpassed the previous record of six hours and 33 minutes set at the 2004 French Open, when Fabrice Santoro beat fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-4 6-3 6-7 3-6 16-14.

Watch match highlights on ESPN

The duration of the fifth set alone, currently standing at seven hours and six minutes, beat the previous record.

The giant Isner has also set a world record for aces in a match, sending down 98 with Mahut notching up 95.

“Nothing like this will ever happen again, ever,” said a visibly shattered Isner.

“I don’t know what to say.”

Isner had match point at 59-58, but Mahut saved it with an ace and went on to level again.

Match officials then called the game off at 9:10 pm local time although Isner wanted to play on.

Mahut, who had appeared the less tired, said: “We played for too long, I don’t know how many hours we played.”

The second round match had been stopped the previous night due to bad light and had still not been finished 24 hours later.

It was watched by a crowd of less than 800 on the outside court, but as news spread of the incredible final set, fans and players gathered around to attempt to catch a glimpse of one of the most remarkable matches in sporting history.

Defending champion Roger Federer summed it up:

“This is beyond anything I’ve ever seen. It’s absolutely amazing,” he told gathered reporters.

“I have almost no words anymore watching this.

“I don’t know how their bodies must be feeling. This is incredible tennis. Someone has to lose but in this match both will be winners.”

Tournament officials will have a headache on Thursday as both men are due to begin their third round matches, if they can be eventually separated after their epic encounter which has so far stretched for 163 games.

Striker Jermain Defoe’s first-half goal gave England the win but they finished second in Group C behind the United States and now face Germany on Sunday.

“This is what I wanted to see – the spirit and to see them fight together,” said Capello.

“We’ll now go forward. Their minds are free and they can play without fear.”

The 64-year-old Italian added that he was happy he had “rediscovered the team he knew from qualification”.

Captain Steven Gerrard, who played predominantly on the left, had been confident England would get the required result, despite being under immense pressure.

“We showed passion, fight and team spirit – we’re delighted to go through,” stated the Liverpool midfielder.

“We’ve done it before when our backs have been against the wall but we need to do it all the time.

“We need to find consistency, especially in the knockout stages. If we perform like we did against Algeria then we won’t get another chance.”

Gerrard also backed Wayne Rooney to rediscover his form after the Manchester United striker was substituted for Joe Cole in the second half.

Rooney, 24, has yet to score at the finals in South Africa, although he went close when his shot was tipped on to the post by keeper Samir Handanovic.

Capello later revealed that the striker was brought off because his ankle was “not so good” but Rooney is expected to be fit for the game against Germany in Bloemfontein. “Wayne’s had criticism but today he worked his socks off and I know goals are around the corner for him,” added Gerrard.

The 30-year-old midfielder also called on his fellow players to “listen to Capello” during the remainder of their campaign.

His comments follow reports of a meeting between the players and management to discuss why the team had underperformed against the US and Algeria.

“We need to listen to the manager because his ideas are spot on,” he stated.

“The mood is 110% better than it was a few days ago. We go again on Sunday and we don’t care who we play. It’s all about us now. If we turn up and play close to our potential then we’re a match for anyone.”

Defender Matthew Upson, who came in for the suspended Jamie Carragher and made several key interventions, concurred with Capello and Gerrard that the win had everything to do with the players’ spirit.

“The key to winning – forget everything about tactics, it’s about you as a human being, it’s about what you are willing to commit and we did that really well,” said Upson.

Goalscorer Jermain Defoe said it was a dream come true for him to score the winning goal.

The Tottenham striker pounced in the 22nd minute to convert James Milner’s cross from the right.

“I’m lost for words – what a moment,” enthused Defoe. “You dream about this as a young lad. I was focused but we won the game, which was the important thing.

“It was a must-win game, a cup final. The lads were fired up and to get the goal early was great.

“The support was brilliant – it has been difficult for them recently.”

And looking ahead to the rest of the tournament, substitute Joe Cole senses England will only get better and could even win the World Cup.

“I believe we can do it – I’ve felt if from six months ago,” said Cole. “I just believe if everyone in the country thinks the same and if the players do their job, the World Cup starts here.”

Since early June, videos allegedly showing the pop singer Nazril Irham, popularly known as Ariel, having sex with his actress girlfriend, Luna Maya, and a married television presenter, Cut Tari, have spread rapidly across the country via social networking sites, cellphones and pirated DVDs.

Like celebrity sex scandals anywhere, the case has prompted plenty of head-shaking. But this being Indonesia, where laws old and new criminalize acts deemed immoral, those involved in the scandal could suffer more than just embarrassment.

The police have so far questioned at least two celebrities about the videos, and news reports have said that investigators are on the trail of people suspected of distributing the clips online.
The chief detective of the national police, Gen. Ito Sumardi, said the authorities probably would use a controversial 2008 anti-pornography law to charge those responsible for distributing the videos. The law was passed at the urging of Islamic parties, against the resistance of some secularists and religious minorities. It includes heavy penalties for those who download or produce pornography — which critics say is defined so broadly that it could effectively criminalize many of Indonesia’s diverse non-Islamic cultures.

General Sumardi said the celebrities could also be charged if it could be shown that they produced the videos for the consumption of others.

“It depends on whether the clips were stolen, if the laptop was stolen,” General Sumardi said. “We’ll know after questioning if it was really stolen, when and where. We have to check their alibis.” He added that the police could also arrest those involved with the videos under a separate information technology law.

The sex scandal has opened a debate in Indonesia between defenders of free speech and social conservatives who see the situation as a reason for further moral regulation.

“The spread of this video is very worrying, especially if the government or the information minister try to use it to implement a ministerial regulation on new media content,” said the chairman of the Alliance of Independent Journalists, Nezar Patria. “It’s kind of a test, not only of how far the anti-pornography law can be used, but also a test of how the instruments of the government respond to content that wasn’t around five years ago.”

The newspapers initially gave the videos front-page coverage, and news channels broadcast extracts of the clips until they were rebuked by the national broadcasting commission. Articles have carried reports that around 30 videos of Mr. Irham with dozens of women have yet to be released.

Discussion of the scandal, dubbed Peterporn after Mr. Irham’s band, Peterpan, briefly became the most popular topic worldwide last week on the social networking site Twitter.

In response, the police have raided Internet cafes and schools have searched students’ cellphones.

Advertisers have deserted the celebrities allegedly involved in the scandal, despite their denials. Both Mr. Irham and Ms. Maya, who interviewed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during her visit to Jakarta last year, have seen their advertisements for the soap brand Lux removed.

Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring, a member of the Islamic Prosperous Justice Party that pushed the 2008 anti-pornography law through Parliament, said the scandal was a good reason to revive plans that were floated this year to censor the Internet. The ideas were shelved after public objections and the lukewarm response of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

“Indonesia is still free, but in the future we will try to minimize the amount of access to pornographic sites,” Mr. Sembiring said, adding that any filter would also block blasphemy, gambling, violence and online fraud.

“I think today the people understand about the usefulness of that regulation,” he said.

“We need to make the same regulation as Australia, the same as Singapore, but not like China, I think.”

Mr. Sembiring said that it was unlikely anyone would be charged under the anti-pornography law for the videos, but that those involved in one video could be charged under provisions in the criminal code banning adultery.

Despite the tough talk from conservatives, the videos remain freely available. For social liberals, they reflect Indonesians’ attitudes toward religion and sexuality — evident in traditional customs, often-racy popular culture and a thriving commercial sex industry.

“We try to close our eyes that it doesn’t exist in Indonesia, but it does exist in Indonesia,” said Julia Perez, a model, actress and singer famous in the country for skimpy outfits and sexually suggestive lyrics.

“We cover it with religion, we cover it with culture, but we have to open our eyes, us Indonesian people, that there exist people like that who love sex — sex is normal, sex is like what you need.”
